For the first and only time this season, the PCM football team was defeated Saturday in the UNI-Dome, falling 38-21 to Waukon in the semifinal round of the Class 2A playoffs. The Indians struck quickly with two first quarter touchdowns, each with 2-point conversions for a 16-0 lead after one.
PCM got on the board early in the second with a six-yard touchdown pass from Auggie Stock to Jacob Van Winkle to get within 16-7. That score was quickly answered by Waukon, making it 24-7. A 40-yard touchdown bomb from Stock to Van Winkle just before the half made it 24-14 Indians heading into the locker room.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Mustangs got within three with a 23-yard Van Winkle touchdown run. That would conclude PCM’s scoring, as two late Mustang turnovers helped Waukon add two more scores and run the clock out to advance to the championship game.
Waukon won the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes, and often was aided by spectacular special teams plays to give their offense favorable field position. An injury to dual threat starting quarterback Creed Welch did little to slow the Indians down. PCM was forced out of their usual rhythm, and was unable to sustain any momentum that was on their side.
Auggie Stock finished the final game of his sophomore season ⅜ for 76 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Senior Sage Burns finished his Mustang football career with 18 rushes for 114 yards. Senior Andrew Mitchell led the way defensively with 7.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.
PCM’s season comes to a close with an overall record of 10-1. 24 seniors depart the program.
