The Pleasantville girls’ basketball season begins tonight at home as the Trojans host the Sabers of Twin Cedars tonight at 6:30 P.M.
Pleasantville is looking to get their season started on the right track, after finishing with an 8-14 record last winter. Despite their losing record, however, they were 5-3 in non-conference games, including a 40-29 victory over Twin Cedars in 2019. Their 3-11 conference record was tied for 9th in the West Central Conference with Interstate 35.
Coach Jeff Cook’s Trojans will have four starters returning from last season, including leading scorer and rebounder Malorie McKinney, who is entering her junior year. Last year, McKinney averaged 10.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Other starters returning include Rachel Harvey, Breanna Benge, and Adi Adreon.
Over the last two matchups between these two teams, the Trojans’ defense has suffocated the Sabres’ offense, allowing less than 30 points against them in each outing, including 29 last year and 23 in 2018.
Twin Cedars are looking to improve their record from last season, finishing 5-18 on the year, including 2-11 in non-conference games overall. The player to watch for Twin Cedars is Junior Brooke Roby, who averaged 11.7 points per game last season. Twin Cedars Coach Trent Verwers tells KRLS Sports more than one girl will have to score for his team to be successful this season
“So it’s up to the other girls.” Verwers states. “Cheyanne Bruns can break out a few ten-point games. It’s going to be up to the other girls to depend on the kind of success we have this year. We can’t rely on Brooke Roby every single year.”
Roby will be one of two starters returning from last season for Coach Verwers’ Sabers. The other starter returning will be Senior Chloe Swank, who led the team in rebounding last season, as she averaged 4.4 rebounds to go with her 8.5 points per game.
