The Mustangs are officially back in action.
The PCM Girls Basketball Team is ready to attack the 2020-21 season, looking to build off of last year’s 10-23 record. This was an improvement from their nine win season the year before and a seven win season the year before that.
After losing four seniors last year, most notably Regan Freland, PCM will have another four entering their final season. These include Emma George, Lilli Baird, Celeste Wagaman, and Riley Hjortshoj. Hjortshoj did not start a game last year, but did appear in 22 of 23 contests. She is PCM’s tallest player at 5’10”. Baird started all 23 games in 2019-20. George and Wagaman started 19 and 10 games last year, respectively. Baird is their leading returner at less than eight points per game, second best on the team. The aforementioned Freland led the way with 16.5 PPG.
The team will have a dozen players on their roster and some decent experience. Head Coach Jeff Lindsay describes what last year was like and what the team’s focus is on in this embattled 2020-21 campaign.
“We play a very tough schedule. Last year, we had the likes of North Polk and Gilbert who were rated highly in Class 3A and 2A. We’re not running away from the competition. We’re definitely playing a good slate of teams throughout the season and we’re always challenging ourselves. I know, and I’ve told the girls, that wins look really good, but unless you’re going to win the conference, it’s about continually getting better and trying to make that postseason run.”
The Mustangs will open up their season at Chariton on Saturday at 2 pm. You can hear 13 PCM basketball broadcasts, 12 involving the girls team, live on the KNIA/KRLS family of networks. The first for the girls will be December 4th at Nevada for a varsity doubleheader, which can be heard on the KRLS3 stream at kniakrls.com.
