With less than a week before they tip off their season, it’s time to run down what to expect from the PCM boys in 2020-21.
Longtime coach Fred Lonensen is back, but his top two scorers from last year will be missed. Derek Brown and Jason Stafford scored twice as many points as their leading returner, junior Durant Van Dyke, who averaged 7.4 points per game last year. Van Dyke is also their tallest player at 6’4”.
PCM currently has eight seniors on their roster, but four of them are new to the program. The leading senior coming back is Gatlin Boell, who averaged 6.8 PPG a year ago.
The Mustangs are a very nice program, with nothing but winning seasons since at least 2006-07. Last year was the down year, by default, finishing 12-11 after an 11-5 start. They certainly hope to keep that tradition going into this embattled 2020-21 campaign.
Coach Lorensen discusses what to expect this season for his team in a pretty good conference that has lost a couple of schools who moved up in competition.
“We have a really good conference. We always have. We have lost Gilbert and North Polk, who are two really good programs because they have pulled out to bigger school conferences. So those two are gone. West Marshall replaces them and they’re going to be very good. They’ve had a very good program for a long time. As far as the conference goes, we probably have two or three teams that might be the favorites, but the entire conference is good. We feel like we can be right in the thick of the race.”
The Mustangs will open their season Monday at home against Saydel. Hear several PCM games live on the KNIA/KRLS family of networks, starting with Tuesday, December 1st at home vs. Knoxville. That game can be heard on 95.3 KNIA.
