It was a disappointing first doubleheader of the season for the Norwalk basketball teams as they traveled to Huxley to take on Ballard in non-conference action, as heard live on 94.3 KNIA. The Norwalk girls could not sustain any momentum in a 46-15 loss to the #3 in Class 4A Bombers. Ballard raced out to a 13-3 first quarter lead, but the Norwalk defense improved as the game went on. The Bombers were held to just eight points in the second quarter and six points in the third. Unfortunately, several turnovers plagued the Warriors from the start. Despite the loss, Head Coach Jill Martin sees a bright future with this team.

Just two players scored in the game for the Warriors. Jocelyn Bice led the way with eight points while Ava Johnson tacked on seven. Norwalk falls to 0-2 on the season.

Back on the court for the first time since hoisting last season’s Class 3A State Championship trophy inside Wells Fargo Arena, the Norwalk boys got off to a sluggish start in a 71-46 loss. Ballard jumped out to a quick 10-point lead early on, and the Warriors were unable to put together a run to get back within striking distance. A sharp-shooting performance out of the halftime locker room by Ballard thwarted a valiant Norwalk comeback attempt, and the deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Head Coach Chris Larson says it was a learning experience for many of his players that are being tasked with new roles this season.

Cole Tunender led the way with 11 points, while Ethan Carlson added 10. Norwalk starts the season 0-1 overall. Both the girls and boys teams will be back in action Friday evening for the conference and home openers when Pella Christian makes the visit. That game will air live on 92.1 KRLS, with Jon Mohwinkle and Steve Wermerskirchen calling the action.
