If Friday night at Pella High School was any indication, it should be another fun and competitive season in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

In a clash between preseason league contenders, Pella’s boys pulled off a 17-point deficit comeback to win in overtime 64-61 over Indianola, while the No. 15 in Class 5A Indians girls knocked off the Lady Dutch 63-55, as heard on 94.3 KNIA.

Indianola came roaring out of the gates in the nightcap, outscoring Pella 21-6 in the first eight minutes, and pulling to a 16-point advantage twice in the first half. But the Dutch finished with nine blocked shots and 11 team steals, eventually coming back to take a 4th quarter lead before overtime. In the extra period, the teams traded the lead three times, but it was Pella’s Parker Elder who finished a spectacular 2nd half with a pair of critical dunks that ultimately pushed the Dutch to a three-point win.

Elder finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds for Pella, followed by Karl Miller’s 14 points and nine boards. Indianola’s Cooper Nailor scored 16 points and dished nine assists, and Drew Kingery scored 15 points and nabbed four steals.

It was the Lady Dutch who had the fast start in the opening game of the twin bill, pulling ahead to a 13-4 advantage halfway through the first quarter, but 11 first-half turnovers by Pella were to Indianola’s advantage as the road team outscored the Lady Dutch 24-10 over the final 12 minutes of the first half.

Pella pushed the game to within two after the 3rd quarter, but the Indians’ offense built a late advantage behind a nine point second half from Lauren Blake and additional forced errors from their defense.

Indianola Freshman Kendall McDaniel had a breakout night in the post, scoring 19 points and tabbing nine rebounds, and scored a critical three pointer late in the fourth quarter that ultimately iced the contest. Five Indianola girls finished in double figures scoring. Pella was paced by 15 points and six rebounds from Madison Naig, an eight-board night for Annika Peterson, and 11 points and six rebounds from Reagan Van Wyk.

The Pella boys are 2-0 and the girls fall to 1-2 overall — both are on the road to Washington Tuesday, which can be heard on 92.1 KRLS.

Indianola’s boys are now 1-1 and the girls improve to 2-1 — the teams are at home hosting Council Bluffs Lincoln. Pregame coverage begins at 3:15 p.m. today with Andrew Swadner and Kim Arndt on 94.3 KNIA.
