Pella Historical Society made changes to the annual Sinterklaas Day festivities over the weekend. Community members came to the base of the Vermeer Windmill Saturday morning to get a treat bag with Sinterklaas goodies, handed out by new Tulip Queen Alyssa Geetings and the rest of the Royal Court, which includes Hannah Tschetter, Ashley Hardman, Olivia De Haan Burch, and Tessa Brouwer. Additional videos and photos were posted on Pella Historical Society’s social media channels as it related to the annual Sinterklaas celebration. The annual parade originally scheduled for Saturday morning was cancelled due to the Governor’s ongoing public health proclamation. In the Netherlands, Saint Nicholas’ Eve–December 5th, became the chief occasion for gift-giving during the winter holiday season. Sinterklaas is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children, who received gifts in their wooden shoes on December 6th.
