In a long standing non-conference basketball rivalry, it was a blowout sweep for Pella Christian over PCM Monday night, with the Eagles girls winning 53-30 and the boys 74-40 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Pella Christian rode another strong 3rd quarter on their way to a cruising victory — the Eagles outscored the Mustangs by an 18-3 margin after the halftime break. The first half was marred by 26 combined turnovers and a series of runs between both schools.
Allison Van Gorp led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds, Emri Agre hit four three-pointers to score a dozen, and Anna Bonnett tallied seven steals. Lilli Baird tallied eight points for PCM.
In the nightcap, the Pella Christian boys opened with a steal and two-hand dunk for Eric Mulder and never looked back, holding PCM without a field goal until 5:11 in the 2nd quarter and opening with an 18-2 lead. The Mustangs closed the gap a bit with a 10-2 run to open the 3rd quarter, but the Eagles hot shooting and difficult defense were too much for the road team to overcome.
Pella Christian had four scorers reach double figures — Jadeon Huisman led the way with a dozen by making four-of-five shots from three, Levi Schelhaas and Lucas Hol each added 11, and Eric Mulder had a 10-point, five-steal, five-bound, and three-block night.
The Mustangs were paced by 12 points from Carson Vandelune and 11 from Durant VanDyke.
The Eagles girls improve to 3-1 — matching their regular season win total from last winter, and the boys are now 1-2 and host Indianola Friday for a conference doubleheader, which can be heard on 94.3 KNIA and the KRLS2 stream.
PCM falls to 0-5 on the girls team and 0-4 for the boys, and search for elusive first victories Friday at Greene County, which can be heard on KRLS3. Their games tonight vs. Saydel have been postponed, as their district is now in virtual learning.
