The Indianola wrestling team took down Dallas Center-Grimes on their home mats Thursday evening 46-27 to start their Little Hawkeye Conference season unbeaten. The Indians got wins by fall from Bowen Downey at 106lbs, Sean Cunningham at 170lbs, Jacob Darr at 182lbs, Jaylin Smith at 220lbs, and Cael Crawford at heavyweight. The Indians also picked up wins from Cael Meacham at 120lbs by major decision, as did Camden Lloyd at 145lbs, while Ryder Downey won at 132lbs by technical fall. The Indians will next compete tomorrow, hosting five other teams for a tournament.
The Indianola girls basketball squad will try to keep their three-game winning streak alive, while the boys try to break a two-game loss streak on the road tonight at Pella Christian in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Indians boys have dropped two close games to ranked opponents, and face an Eagles squad that is receiving votes in class 2A and is battle-tested to start the season. The Indians girls played their best game of the season in a win over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln on Saturday, and head coach Jeff Janssen tells KNIA Sports the Indians need to continue to improve like they have over the past week.
“Our camaraderie is so great right now, our communication is fantastic, and to continue to make steps in the right direction we are going to need those things for sure. We challenge them to be better defenders, to get better looks, and to recognize some of our weaknesses and turn them into strengths.”
The game can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA, with Andrew Schneider on the play-by-play. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45pm.
