On a day that saw many tournaments in the area cancelled, PCM toughed it out and competed at Carlisle on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they were swept and went from two matches over .500 to one match under and currently sit at 7-8.
It started with a loss to Grinnell 48-24. The Mustangs only won four matchups out of twelve, one of which was by forfeit. They then fell to North Polk by the exact same margin. Colby Tool, a state medalist in the past, wound up losing his first match of the year to Chance Bockenstedt in a bout at 160 lbs. Finally, the Mustangs fell to the host in Carlisle 54-30. Landon Fenton (145 lbs.) and Hewitt Brinegar (120 lbs.) were the only PCM wrestlers to go 3-0 on the day.
It was a very busy stretch for the Mustangs as this was their fifth event of 2020, all of which took place in a 10-day span.
Head Coach Jeff Nicholson says that despite the grind, he is pleased with the effort and energy his boys have shown.
“Overall I’m very pleased with how they’re competing. I’ve been pleased with this group and how hard they work in the room. These kids hustle in practice. I can push them a little bit harder than I have other teams at this point in the season. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made.”
PCM’s next meet is this Thursday at home.
