The Norwalk basketball teams played host to Oskaloosa Friday evening in the final doubleheader of the calendar year. The Warriors entered Christmas break on a positive note with a sweep of the Indians, with the girls winning 60-21 and the boys securing a 52-36 win, as aired on KNIA3.

The Norwalk girls played Oskaloosa to yet another close first half. Norwalk led 23-16 at the half in what started as a low-scoring affair. But the Warriors were able to turn their third quarter woes as of late into great success, outscoring the Indians 37-5 in the second half to leave no doubt. The 35-point running clock rule also took effect in the second half as the Warriors asserted their dominance. Head Coach Jill Martin was incredibly proud of her team’s defensive effort.

Along with a lockdown defense, Jocelyn Bice led the way offensively, scoring a dazzling 28 points. Norwalk improves to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

The Norwalk boys had themselves a dominant first half defensively, allowing just five Oskaloosa points in the first quarter. Norwalk extended the lead to as many as 22 in the second and third quarters, and held strong to the lead despite the Indians continuously chipping away at the deficit. Head Coach Chris Larson liked the way his team played defense throughout the night, and says that aspect of the game will be prioritized more throughout the season with less offensive firepower.

Cole Tunender led a balanced scoring effort with 10 points, as the Warriors move to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Friday’s games were the final games of 2020. Norwalk is back in action Monday, January 4th at home against Van Meter.
