The Indianola girls and boys basketball squads swept Warren County rival Carlisle Monday night in a pair of games heard live on 94.3 KNIA, the girls winning 62-36 and the boys 82-43.
The Indians girls had a slow start trailing 10-5 near the end of the first quarter, before going on a 22-5 run to take a commanding lead with lockdown defense, and earning a 34-17 going into the halftime break. The run continued through the third quarter, with the Indians holding the Wildcats eventually building a 20-point lead that wouldn’t falter. Kendall Clatt led the Indians with 16 points, while Kendall McDaniel scored 15 off the bench.
The Indians boys had a slow start to the contest as well, leading 20-16 at the end of the second quarter, but dominated from then on holding the Wildcats to just six second quarter points and 10 third quarter points, while building a 61-30 lead at the end of the third with a dominant defense that held the Wildcats scoreless for the first 5:44 of the third quarter. Head coach Brett Watson tells KNIA sports his team buckled down defensively after halftime to pick up a strong win heading into the new year.
“We talked about playing unselfish basketball, and we saw in the first half that our rotations were a bit slow, and we did a much better job with that in the second half. What’s true with our team, if we can get a couple stops in a row and capitalize on the offensive end we can get that momentum going. It was really great to see to start the third quarter.”
Drew Kingery led the Indians in scoring with 19 points, while Caden Rehmeier dropped 17. The Indians girls have won six in a row to improve to 6-1 on the season, while the boys even their record at 3-3. Both teams will next see the court in 2021, hosting Lewis Central on January 2nd.
