Pella Christian’s girls led wire-to-wire in a 52-46 victory over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, while the boys fell to Ottumwa 58-43 in a split doubleheader on Eagle Lane heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Allison Van Gorp scored 12 first quarter points for the PC girls as they built an early double digit lead. And while the Rockets clawed back within four in the fourth quarter, they never got any closer and the Eagles held on for the victory. Head Coach Brad Engbers said that the hot start, specifically by Van Gorp, was the key to getting the win.
“Allison had a really good first half, and I was kind of hard on her at halftime not realizing how many points she had, because I expect a lot out of her. She had a good game tonight with 22 points, and it was a good team effort tonight.”
Van Gorp grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with her 22 points. Joslyn Terpstra added 9 points and Emri Agree chipped in 8. The Eagles finish the 2020 portion of their schedule at 4-3.
The boys contest was a one-possession game for the entire first quarter, but Pella Christian turned the ball over five times in the first four minutes of the second quarter, while being held scoreless, and never really got back in the game. Ottumwa led 29-18 at halftime, and built a 20 point lead by the end of the third quarter.
Eric Mulder led the Eagles with 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Bennett Spronk scored 8. The Pella Christian boys enter the holiday break with a 2-4 record.
Up next for both teams is a home doubleheader against Des Moines Christian on January 2nd.
