A winter storm brought heavy snow and a mix of sleet and freezing rain to south central Iowa and most of the state Tuesday.

Accumulating snow started quickly late in the morning, with rates between 1 and 1 1/2″ per hour locally through the evening hours. Mixed precipitation also fell in periodically. State, county, and city crews spent the majority of their afternoons and evenings clearing area highways and streets, with more work to be done today.

Snowfall totals (9 p.m. Wednesday):
Knoxville – 7″ (KNIA/KRLS)
Pella – 6″ (KNIA/KRLS)
Indianola – 7 1/4″ (KNIA/KRLS)
Monroe – 8 1/2″ (National Weather Service)
Norwalk – 9″ (National Weather Service)

More winter weather may be on the way for New Year’s Day, as 2021 may be rung in with a mix of snow, freezing rain, or sleet this Friday. Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS for the latest winter weather information.
