The #14 in class 5A Indianola girls basketball team survived a late comeback attempt by Lewis Central to win in overtime 55-43, while the boys dominated from start to finish against the Titans winning 80-48.
Offense was difficult to come by in the first half in the girls contest, with poor shooting and good defense combining for a 15-9 Indianola lead over the first 16 minutes. The game started to heat up in the third however, with the Indians growing a lead to as big as 15 behind four three-point shots, but Lewis Central refused to go away quietly. The Titans outscored the Indians 19-8 in the fourth quarter, and hit four three’s to eventually take a 42-41 lead with less than thirty seconds left. Mara Bishop was fouled with 6 seconds remaining, and made two free throws, however one was waved off due to a lane violation leading to overtime. In the overtime period, the Indians dominated, outscoring the Titans 13-1 behind three’s from Emma Kluver and Lauren Blake. Head coach Jeff Janssen tells KNIA Sports he’s glad his team picked up the win, but more importantly they will have to find a way to improve from the adversity.
“We made some decisions late in the game that weren’t indicative of three year starters or three year letter winners that our lineup is filled with. So we aren’t going to go back to the drawing board, but we have to evaluate ourselves on Monday, and follow through what we did right on that play, what we did wrong on that play, and get better knowing ourselves because we have a heck of a contest Tuesday night at Grinnell.”
Kendall Clatt led the Indians with 17 points, while Blake scored 12. The Indians have now won seven in a row to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Indians boys were up from start to finish against the Titans, dominating early on building a 20-4 first quarter advantage. The three-point shots continued to rain throughout the contest for Indianola, as they struck 14 times from deep, including six from Caden Rehmeier as the Indians got the lead as high as 35 in the second half. Rehmeier scored 27 points to lead the way, while Drew Kingery dropped 20. The Indians improve to 4-3 on the season, with both teams taking on Little Hawkeye Conference rival Grinnell Tuesday evening, a doubleheader that can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
