The Norwalk basketball teams played their second doubleheader in as many nights Tuesday when they traveled to Newton for Little Hawkeye Conference action. The Warriors earned a sweep, with the girls winning 49-42 and the boys prevailing 54-42, as aired on KNIA3.

The girls game featured a low-scoring first quarter, with Norwalk owning an 11-7 advantage after one. The Cardinals were able to come up with key stops in the second period, and Norwalk found themselves trailing 22-20 at the break. But a strong second half, particularly the fourth quarter, allowed the Warriors to seal the game in the final minutes and hold off any Newton rally. Senior Jayden Lammers says her team’s first road win meant a lot to her team.

Jocelyn Bice again led the way in scoring with 17 points, while freshman Ava Johnson added 12. Norwalk moves to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The Norwalk boys led early, but surrendered a 10-0 Newton run in the second quarter which tied the game at 20. A low-scoring first half, marred by numerous missed Norwalk free throws ended with a 21-20 Warriors advantage.

Norwalk extended their lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter, and the pace started to pick up as the game went on. Head Coach Chris Larson says his team was able to recover, and it was a hard-earned win.

Max Juergens scored 12 points off the bench in what was the fourth straight win for the Warriors. Norwalk improves to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Both teams will return to action Friday evening, hosting Grinnell. Those games will air on the KNIA3 stream.

The Norwalk bowling teams were in action for the first time in 2021 Tuesday evening with both the girls and boys competing at Bondurant-Farrar.

The Warrior girls fell 2258-1838. Macie Slvestor led the Warriors in total pins with 289, as well as a high game of 169.

The Norwalk boys dropped a 2797-2529 decision to the Bluejays. The Warriors will be back in action Saturday at Oskaloosa.
