While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted several projects for non-profit organizations, the Wonder Spelen in Pella is moving forward.

Pella Community Services Director Jeanette Vaughan says the City of Pella is partnering with the Wonder Spelen non-profit organization formed by the Pella Kiwanis to construct an accessible playground at the current Kiwanis Park off of North Main Street in Pella. She says Wonder Spelen has worked with playground designers to develop a plan that includes interactive playground equipment, accessible bathrooms, and sensory play equipment, and the Pella City Council has committed to funding some of the project and handling operations following completion.

The proposed plan is for construction to continue this spring, with final completion by this fall. The playground will include an 80’ x 80’ playground, as well as parking spaces, shade, benches and an accessible restroom. The CIty of Pella is contributing $320,000 to construction and engineering services, while the non-profit is responsible for the difference.
