indianola-3

Both girls and boys basketball squads achieved running clock early in the third quarter in a pair of wins against Oskaloosa Friday evening, the boys winning 80-37 and the girls 75-28 in a pair of games heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

It was a lead from start to finish for the Indians boys, who got off to a ripping hot start, holding Oskaloosa to just five first quarter points, and hitting five three-point shots to lead 23-5 at the end of one. Things only got better for Indianola however, as they would hold Osky to just two second quarter points and scored 32 themselves to essentially end the game after the first 16 minutes with a 55-7 halftime advantage and securing running clock the entire second half. Indianola had four players in double digit scoring, led by Drew Kingery with 19, Casey Glascock with 16, Caden Rehmeier with 13, and Charlie Wilmott with 10, while Cooper Nailor led the squad in rebounds with seven.

The #14 in class 5A Indians girls also catapulted a great defensive effort in the first quarter to win in blowout fashion, building a 25-12 lead at the end of the first, then blew it up in the second holding Osky to just five points to lead by 20 at halftime 37-17. Indianola followed up the intense defensive pressure of the first half with an even better third quarter, scoring 24 points and holding Oskaloosa to just three. Head coach Jeff Janssen tells KNIA Sports after some games where they came out flat in the third quarter, he was proud how his team kept the pressure up.

“I look back to our Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln game a couple weeks ago, where we had a fantastic first half similar to this one, but in the third quarter we came out flat. We didn’t share the basketball, we didn’t knock down shots, or make the extra pass, and we didn’t look inside. Our girls really bought in to that, and that third quarter we were really cooking, and really getting the ball where we wanted to get it. And our girls were really confident and stepping up and knocking down shots.”

Lauren Blake scored 19 to lead the Indians, while Kendall Clatt scored 15, Kendall McDaniel scored 14, and Mara Bishop scored 10.

The Indians girls improve to 9-1 on the season, while the boys are now 6-3, and both teams will next play at Newton on Tuesday.
