HIRTA Public Transit has been awarded a grant from AmeriCorps as part of the RSVP program in Marion County. The RSVP program is a volunteer group for people ages 55 and older. Volunteers are matched with community needs based on skills, talents and experience. This program is intended to improve the quality of life for people in the underserved population while bringing volunteer opportunities to individuals wanting to help.
HIRTA will expand service to those at risk of isolation who would not otherwise have access to food and medical services. They will work with Marion County Public Health, Aging Resources of Central Iowa, and local senior services.
All RSVP volunteers will be placed in outcome assignments, including transportation, companionship, food support and other opportunities. HIRTA’s goal is to have individuals report having increased social support and a better capacity for independent living by the end of the three-year grant.
