Winter weather has had a strong impact across the region in the 2020-21 season thus far. There have been five snow events with at least an inch of snow falling, according to a winter storm database maintained by Iowa State University’s Iowa Environmental Mesonet. Climate data from the National Weather Service indicates 25 inches of snow has fallen on average in Marion County since the beginning of this winter season; in a typical winter, central Iowa averages 35 inches. Additional precipitation chances return this weekend, however, the heaviest snow will fall in the northeast half of the state, while a rain/snow/sleet mix remains possible locally starting Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.
