The Iowa Senate approved the “School Choice” legislation this past week, approving, among other items, public funds to be used for private school scholarships known as vouchers. State Senator Julian Garrett tells KNIA News the schools targeted by the bill are the lowest performing schools in the state, and gives parents a choice. Senator Garrett said he doesn’t believe the funding behind this bill would make much of an impact if it was diverted as more funding for the lowest performing schools.

“I really question whether a little more money would make that much of a difference. There are probably reasons that these schools aren’t doing well, and I think it’s more important to give parents a choice than to reward schools that aren’t doing well.”
