The #15 in class 5A Indianola girls shot eight of eight on free throws down the stretch to close out a close contest against Grinnell 68-62, while the Indians boys made 15 three-point shots to close out the sweep in blowout fashion 75-44.
The Tigers and Indians girls teams traded runs throughout the contest, with Grinnell going on an early 8-0 run to take an 8-3 lead in the first, but saw the Indians respond with a 14-4 run to close out the quarter. The second quarter started off much the same, with Grinnell going on an early run and the Indians responding for a 32-28 halftime advantage. After a 9-0 run to start the third from the Tigers, Indianola recovered for a 49-47 slim lead going into the final eight minutes, then would not miss at the line in the final frame to seal the win. Lauren Blake had 19 points in the win, while Emily Naughton had 13 points and 8 rebounds.
It was a show from three-point range for the Indians boys, dropping six first quarter three’s to set the tone early with a 22-12 first quarter lead, then followed that up with a dominating second quarter defensively while dropping another five three-pointers building a 52-23 lead. The Indians got running clock early in the third quarter, and coasted to their second straight victory. Caden Rehmeier scored 19 points to lead the way, while Cooper Nailor scored 14. Nailor said the Indians have shown what they are capable of after some shooting slumps earlier in the season.
“It feels really good, because a team like Grinnell can sit back in a zone and be really frustrating to play against, you really have to shoot them out of it. That’s what they did last time, and tonight we shot them out of it coming out of a rough stretch shooting wise. It was big for us to have a big night tonight.”
The Indians girls improve to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in conference, while the boys are now 10-6 and 6-5. Both teams will next play on Friday on the road at Oskaloosa.
