The Central men’s basketball team held its home opener Saturday, playing host to Coe in American Rivers Conference action. After a delayed start to the season with only limited practice time, the Dutch picked up a 74-68 victory, as aired on 92.1 KRLS.

Central raced out to a 22-11 lead early. But the Kohawks began chipping away, and eventually took the lead for a brief time before the Dutch went into the half up 29-27. The teams traded buckets to start the second half, including a barrage of 3-pointers.

Coe remained within striking distance throughout the second half, and got to within 67-66 with 1:01 to play. Senior Adam Flinn hit four free throws in the final 15 seconds to secure the win. Head Coach Craig Douma says it was an impressive victory for his team, as the odds were stacked against them.

Flinn led the way offensively with 29 points. Sam Beatty scored 14, and Caden Mauck recorded a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Central improves to 1-1 both overall and in conference play. They’ll return to action Monday at 7:00 p.m. in a home makeup game against Dubuque.

Starting out with a 30-6 victory over Buena Vista University, the Central College wrestling team was downed 39–1 in the second match against Wartburg College Saturday afternoon.

Central started strong against the Beavers with five bonus-point victories including falls by Rob Areyano and Griffen McBride. Luis Ramos, who transferred to Central at semester, registered a 16-0 technical fall.

Freshman Brock Beck had a 14-2 major decision at 149 pounds and Samuel Zook earned a 10-1 major decision at 285 pounds. Chase Poston, Shandon Akeo and Christian Wilson all picked up victories by decision.

Against the Knights, Central dropped six matches by decision including a trio by only two points. They were docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Central will complete its third triangular next Saturday in Indianola against Simpson College and Luther College. Central will start with the Norse at 1:30 p.m. and face the Storm at 4:30 p.m.

Winning seven events was key for the Central College men’s track and field in winning a triangular meet at Wartburg College Saturday afternoon. Central compiled 132 points, outpacing Wartburg’s 125 points. Coe College was third with 45.

The Dutch dominated the jumping events, including a sweep of the long jump and triple jump by Brock Lewis. He long jumped 22 feet, 6.5 inches and triple jumped 45-3.75.

Drake Lewis won the high jump with a leap of 6-7.25 and Tanner Johnson topped the pole vault with a mark of 12-11.5 Brody Klein was second after vaulting 12-7.75.

In the 400-meter dash, Carter Tryon picked up the win with a two-lap time of 51.73 seconds. After his first Central meet, freshman Joe Stein is already No. 3 for the Dutch in the 60-meter dash after his winning time of 6.95 seconds. He added a runner-up effort in the 200-meter dash.

Lucas Heitz finished atop the heptathlon standings after a strong second day, totaling 4,361 points. Nick Thompson was second with 4,053 points. The duo is No. 8 and 10 on Central’s top-10 list.

In the throws, Theo Baldus finished top three in both shot put and weight throw, taking second in shot (42-2.25) and third in weight (47-1). Thomas Spoehr was third in the shot put (41-5.75)

In an all-Central field in the 5,000-meter run, Caleb Silver was first in a time of 15:55.91. Jerry Lotz was second in 15:57.81. 60-meter hurdler Jonathan Bossou added a second-place finish of 8.80 seconds.

Central will host the University of Dubuque and Nebraska Wesleyan University next weekend inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. There will be a multi-event starting Friday at 2 p.m. with the rest of the meet starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
