The Pella Christian boys hung on late while the Eagles girls could not complete a comeback in a split with Oskaloosa on Senior Night Tuesday, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
P.C.’s boys came away with a 51-42 win, while the girls dropped their 7th in a row in a 45-36 loss to Osky.
A slow start turned into a 2nd quarter surge in the boys’ nightcap, as Pella Christian closed the first half ona 13-2 run to take a 10 point halftime lead. That margin stretched to 17 late in the 3rd, only for Oskaloosa to close it to within five with 3:32 remaining in the 4th. Back-to-back buckets gave the Eagles the advantage late to close it out.
The win ensured the Eagles would finish the regular season at least .500 overall and this team earned the most conference wins (six) of any Eagles team since they placed 2nd in the standings in 2016-17. Levi Schelhaas led the Eagles with 11 points. Pella Christian is now 11-10 and 6-7 in the conference.
In the opener, Pella Christian’s girls fell behind Oskaloosa 15-2 late in the 1st quarter. The offense didn’t find any rhythm until the 3rd, when the Eagles pushed the game to a 21-all tie. But Oskaloosa’s three point shooting was too much to handle and Pella Christian missed several fastbreak chances and squandered several Indians’ turnovers late. Allison Van Gorp returned to the lineup and added 19 points and 12 rebounds — she is now just one shy of 1,000 for her career.
The Eagles girls drop to 8-12 and 3-10 in the conference; both teams travel to Pella High School Thursday to finish the regular season against Pella.
