Melcher-Dallas’ girls’ basketball team ended a tumultuous season with a first-round playoff exit at Martensdale-St. Mary’s Thursday night as the Saints lost, 60-42; the boys will be back in action for their final game of the regular season as they travel to Sigourney.
The Saints’ girls could not run with the Blue Devils throughout the game, as they were outpaced and outshot the whole night. Kynser Reed led the way in scoring with 11 points. Grace Overgaard had nine points and the Enfield twins, Kacey and Riley each had eight. This was the first time Overgaard, the Enfield twins, and Haley Godfrey stepped on the court in two weeks as they were out due to COVID-19 contact tracing in the Bluegrass Conference Tournament.
Coach Kelsey Goff tells KNIA Sports that she was very impressed with the seniors throughout the roller-coaster season.
“Super proud of the seniors. I didn’t get to coach them all four years, but these last three years. They are a great group of girls. They include the young girls. They are a true team. Not the best of friends off the court, but you don’t have to be. They are still friends though, they don’t talk down to each other, they don’t treat each other badly by any means. They are just a great group of girls that I have been super proud to have coached.”
Melcher-Dallas finishes the season with an 8-11 record overall, including a 4-5 record in Bluegrass Conference play.
The Saints’ boys will close out the regular season tonight at Sigourney. Melcher-Dallas is currently riding a five-game winning streak, including knocking off Wayne Tuesday night. If the Saints’ boys get the win, they will eclipse double-digit wins for the fourth consecutive season. Melcher-Dallas will finish the season with a 5-4 Bluegrass Conference record.
The boys’ game at Sigourney is scheduled to tip off at 6:00 PM.
