As the PCM girls basketball season came to a close on Saturday, it’s time to take a look at the Mustangs journey during this season unlike any other.
The PCM girls finished 4-17 overall, which is the fewest wins in the Varsity Bound era. The Mustang girls opened the season with a one point loss to Chariton, but that was just a sign of things to come as PCM lost their first nine contests to open the year.
In the tenth game, the Mustangs got their first win of the season against Newton 38-28. Following a few losses, PCM got two wins in a three game span with both victories against Saydel, the first of which was on senior night where Emma George, Celeste Wagaman, Lilli Baird, and Riley Hjortshoj got a proper send off.
The Mustangs closed the regular season with perhaps the most impressive win the program has seen for some time as they upset South Hamilton on the road 33-30, a team that bested PCM by 24 points in their first meeting. That magic did not carry over to the postseason, as the Mustangs fell in their opening round game at Nevada.
With four seniors moving on, Emily Foster will take charge as the only junior on the squad. Paige Steenhoek will also be a very talented junior next year as she was PCM’s second leading scorer. There will be a lot missed from this year, but next year does return some quality players as well as some younger players set to step up.
