melcher-dallas-3

After a 9-10 season in 2020-21, Melcher-Dallas Boys Basketball Coach Jim Wells announced his retirement Tuesday night.

Wells coached basketball for 23 years and won 215 career games. During his time, he has seen countless all-conference players, three 1,000-point scorers, and a journey that is second to none. Wells tells KNIA Sports that he knew his time was coming.

“I’m 63 years old. It’s time to let someone else go in there and coach those boys. I may be a long ways away, but I may still get on the booster club or the Iowa High School Athletic Association and I will still be watching you guys play. It would be fun watching those and be that far away. It’s been a really great haul for me for all those years. You gotta put a lot of dedication and  extra time in it.”

Wells also states that during the cold Iowa winters he will be travelling down south more often. The Saints’ season ended with a playoff loss at North Mahaska Tuesday night.
