The Marion County Assessor’s Office has sent reminders to property owners to look for property assessments in the mail at the beginning of April. Assessor Kelli Kingrey says that these are sometimes overlooked, and that this is the opportunity to protest the assessed value.
“Sometimes people disregard those because they aren’t a tax statement. Maybe they’re sort of confusing, what the purpose of those are. We wanted to put those postcards out about a month ahead just to remind people to pay attention to their assessment notice. By the time you pay property taxes on that value, it’s 18 months later, and you cannot protest your taxes, you can only protest your value.”
Kingrey notes that a variety of factors determine property values, and people should inform the assessor’s office of changes that would affect the value. Hear more from Marion County Assessor Kelli Kingrey on today’s Let’s Talk Knoxville.
