The American Rescue Plan was recently signed into law by President Biden, which includes local dollars for cities and $1,400 stimulus checks for all eligible adults. Congresswoman Cindy Axne tells KNIA News she tried to use her experience from the similar situation in the 2009 stimulus and apply it to this bill.
“I was part of the group that oversaw reinvestment and recovery act money that came in to help with the recession. Any economist in retrospect says that what happened was we fell short because people said it was too big and shouldn’t spend money. We didn’t infuse the economy with the capital that was needed. What that did was exacerbate unemployment for a much longer period of time, and really impacted underemployment as well. What we saw was the long term impacts of that, that we barely started coming out of because we didn’t make sure we had what we needed coming out of a really difficult time.”
