The 2021 spring sports season marks a return for high school athletes to track, soccer, golf, and tennis, and over the next 10 weeks, several athletes from Pella High School will be making pushes for conference titles and state tournament appearances:
Pella Boys Golf Preview – AUDIO
After missing out on a potential run at a trophy finish in Class 3A, the Pella boys golf team turns the page after graduating three college-caliber players one year ago. Pella Head Coach Bob Fessler says while there will be plenty of new faces in their varsity lineup and there’s a bit more uncertainty about how far the team can go, they know their top player will be up to the challenge. He says Will Simpson, a junior, is poised for a special campaign after finishing in the Top 20 rankings as a freshman in 2019 and with his continued success in state and national tournament play. Pella opens the 2021 golf season Friday at Saydel.
Pella Boys Tennis Preview – AUDIO
One team not lacking for experience played their most recent high school tennis at the state meet, just points away from a 1A championship. While they graduated All-State player and multiple-time state qualifier Jordan Roozeboom in 2020 and missed that chance to push for the top trophy in the state, many members of that runner-up team are set to take the next step this spring. Pella Boys Tennis Head Coach Josiah Brandt says Jack Edwards, Vaughn Thompson, and Geordie Laidlaw were all in the starting lineup as sophomores for that state run — and Edwards was 3rd in the individual 1A meet two years ago, and that trio, along with sophomore Caleb Briggs, who was a varsity regular as a freshman, and a slew of newcomers, makes this season potentially special. The Pella boys tennis team begins competition Tuesday at North Polk High School.
