Pounding out 21 hits in the doubleheader only yielded eight runs for the Central College baseball team as it was swept 15-7, 11-1 against Wartburg College Monday afternoon. The Knights (6-8, 4-4 American Rivers Conference) had 26 hits on its way to 26 runs, including 12 extra-base knocks. The Dutch (4-8, 2-6 conference) only managed eight total runs despite the 21 hits.

Jared Kampf and Landon Vander Leest were the leading hitters for the Dutch with 4-for-7 performances. Vander Leest drove in three runs and had a home run and a triple.

Getting his first start of the season, second baseman Chris Hensley was 2-for-3 in game two. Reliever Landon Thiele took the pitching loss in game one while starter Drew Coffman was losing pitcher in game two. Eight different pitchers allowed 17 free passes with 14 walks and three hit batsmen. Central committed four defensive errors.

Central hosts Luther College for four games this weekend, starting with a twinbill Friday at 1 p.m.

Temperatures were more tolerable but fierce winds again sent scores soaring for the Central College men’s golf team Monday at the 36-hole Eagle Spring Classic Monday. With winds gusting as high as 50 miles per hour, the Dutch closed in seventh place in the 15-team tourney at 329-329—658 on the par-72 Hunters Ridge Golf Course. Host Kirkwood Community College took top honors with 303-299-602. American Rivers rival Luther College was fifth at 314-320—634, Buena Vista University was eighth at 326-336—662 and Wartburg College was 12th at 342-348-690.

Dustin Haines, in his first varsity appearance of the spring, strengthened his hold on a roster spot with the team’s low rounds 78-80—158 for the Dutch. He tied for 12th individually as Kolby Schackleford of Kirkwood shot 75-73—148 and tied teammate James Morgan, who shot 72-76—148. They were the only players under 151.

Jacob Moffett followed at 80-83–163, Matt Briggs had 84-84–168, Harold Dobernecker had 91-82—173 and Lucas Wendel shot 87-88—175. Kyle Gabos shot 80-79–159 and Wyatt Crosbyhad 84-87–171.

The Dutch compete at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational Friday and Saturday at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Illinois.
