The spring sports season begins today across the state of Iowa, with area golf, tennis, track, and soccer teams returning to action for the first time since COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 calendar.

Among the Pella High School teams in action today is the girls track and field team as they travel to Waukee and the boys tennis team as they travel to North Polk.

Tennis Head Coach Josiah Brandt says the Comets will be a great match to kick off the season, especially with the recent success of their program — even with the mystery of all schools missing competition.

“We know what we have coming back after two years of not playing, but I have no idea what North Polk is going to have,” he says. “I know they have a Moon playing, Evan Moon was kind of a thorn in our side for three years, and his younger brother is playing again.”

The Lady Dutch track and field team starts competition at 4 p.m. in Waukee, while the boys tennis team is in action at 4:15 in Alleman.
