The Pella Police Department has announced updated hiring and promotion standards. Those considering becoming a law enforcement officer in the Tulip City will be required to have at least a two-year college degree. Pella Police Chief Shane McSheehy says this is one of many new changes in hiring, promotions and training requirements command staff members have recently revised. He says the Pella Police Department seeks to raise the bar and maintain a level of professionalism and proficiency well above national industry standards. The majority of members from the Pella Police Department already have advanced degrees ranging from Associate to Master’s. In addition to requiring an advanced two-year degree, all future promotions within the agency will have specific educational and degree requirements related to the position. Minimum training standards have also been increased not only in annual attendance hours, but also includes ensuring relevant training topics are addressed and met.

“My first focus each and every day is the professional and personal well-being of each member of this agency. Officers who are well-trained and educated make exceptional officers. I want to ensure we are not only hiring the best, but also support and value our officers by providing continual training, educational opportunities and mentorship
