A Pella High School senior enters the homestretch of the 2021 track and field season with a memory of a lifetime.
Kody Huisman won the 2021 Drake Relays Shot Put High School Championship with a throw of 58 feet, 7 inches at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday. The Drake Relays pits the best Iowa High School Athletes against each other regardless of classification. Huisman says he’s worked on a new technique for throwing that mimics the spin of his discus throw, which he believes can still improve.
“It felt really good, I had shot put and figured it out, and have been working on a spin and just went out there and threw and had fun,” he says. “It felt pretty awesome to win a championship at Drake and I hope to do it again at state.”
Huisman will have two more regular season home meets (April 29th and May 10th), before competing in the state qualifying meet at Pella High School on Thursday, May 11th. Kody is a multiple-time state qualifier, and aims to sweep the 3A events with championships in a potential return to Drake Stadium in four weeks.
