It was Dutch domination at the Class 1A Boys District Tennis meet in Knoxville Wednesday, as Pella ran away with the tournament championship, and will send three entries to the state individual/doubles meet later this month.
Jack Edwards and Vaughn Thompson were the district champions in doubles. The duo is one of the favorites to contend for a state title, and swept through their matches in short order.
Pella’s Lucas Heap edged teammate Caleb Briggs in the singles district finals, with both advancing to state in the individual bracket.
The doubles duo of Adam Schreur and Jack Briggs placed 3rd after coming within points of making it to an all-Pella finals in their match against Grinnell.
The Knoxville Boys Tennis Squad finished 4th Wednesday at the class 1A district held at the Joel Tonda Tennis Courts in Knoxville. The Panthers’ Gabe Matthias took 3rd place in singles. He was the 3rd seed and took care of his first round opponent, Beau Bush of Pella Christian 6/1, and 6/0, then defeated Cole Johnson of Grinnell 6/1, 6/0 before falling to Pella’s Caleb Briggs in the semi-finals. Matthias came back to win his 3rd place match over Khydia Yang of Oskaloosa.
Andrew Orr also played singles and won his first round match but lost to Yang in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Knoxville’s Jaxon Zuck and Carter Short had the unenviable taste of playing top the top seeded team from Pella and fell to straight sets while Knoxville’s other duo Nate Crane and Grant Liston were able to win a first round match.
The No. 2 in Class 1A Dutch boys tennis team remains undefeated, and have earned a first round bye in the 2021 team substate tournament, returning to action on Saturday, May 22nd at home. Knoxville’s season has come to an end with a 5-3 dual meet record.
