Rain moving their competitions indoors did not slow a pair of Tulip City tennis teams on their way to earn state appearances Saturday.
The No. 2 Pella boys tennis team dominated Atlantic and Grinnell in Ames to advance to the Class 1A final four in Des Moines on June 1st, while the No. 5 Pella Christian girls toppled No. 8 Pella to move on to the state quarterfinals Monday.
For the Dutch, it was another exercise in dominance as the team enters the semifinals undefeated in dual and invitational play this season, winning 5-0 over both teams in relatively short order. The final four in 1A boys tennis will play at the Waveland Tennis Complex in Des Moines on June 1st at 8:15 a.m., with No. 1 Xavier, No. 3 Wahlert, and No. 6 Spencer remaining.
The Tulip City rematch was much closer in nature, with Kelly Van Wyk, Katy Roose, and Sydney Van Arendonk of Pella Christian all earning tiebreaker victories in the singles matches and the duo of Megan Kramer and Van Wyk — both state bound in the doubles tournament, clinching victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alloree Else and Emily Blom.
