All Indianola sports teams in action Friday night came out on the winning end, with the Indianola girls soccer team taking down Ottumwa in the first round of regional action 5-0, the Indians baseball team sweeping Des Moines East in a doubleheader 11-3 and 9-2, and the softball team taking down Southeast Polk 11-1 in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Indians soccer team scored three first half goals and added a pair in the second in regional play, with Megan Howard scoring a brace, and Camdyn Gross, Alyvia Fuller, and Mara Cosenza each putting in a single goal. The Indians will now move on to face #1 WDM Valley on Wednesday in the regional semifinals.
Indianola baseball continued their undefeated streak to begin the season, scoring runs early and often in both contests against the Scarlets. Game one saw Casey Stecker earn the win on the mound, with Carter Erickson going 2-4 and Kael Kolarik going 2-2 with a double to lead the offense. Game two had Connor Howard take a no-hit bid into the seventh inning before East pushed a hit into right field, but Howard recovered to get the win striking out 13 to get the win. Kolarik had another pair of hits in the second contest, with Brady Blake also going 2-3. The Indians improve to 5-0 and will play Carlisle on Monday.
The Indianola softball team scored 10 runs in the first three innings against Southeast Polk in the annual Strike Out Cancer game, with Kate Kralik pitching a gem in the circle striking out 7. The Indians got RBI singles in the first from Kylee Tucker and Macie Mays, then added six in the second with RBI’s from Tucker and Mays as well as Mara Bishop, with Alley May and Destiny Lewis each hitting a solo shot in the third. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA Sports the middle of their lineup is producing what they need to to start the season.
“I do feel that teams are sometimes at a loss with them. We’ve had a situation where one of them have been intentionally walked to get to the next batter. It’s pretty hard when one of them goes on, and the other then continues to follow through and grab a big hit. They are producing a number of RBI’s, and give credit to those that are on before them. Doing a great job, and knock on wood I hope it continues and we need it to continue.”
The Indians are now 4-1 on the season, and will match up with Pella Christian on Wednesday to begin Little Hawkeye Conference play.
