hree Pella boys tennis seniors made a run at state gold, and finished in 2nd place in the Class 1A individual brackets after a two-day tournament wrapped up Saturday in Waterloo.

The doubles duo of Jack Edwards and Vaughn Thompson finished 2nd in their bracket, and dropped the final two sets to Xavier’s Brady Horstmann and Matthew Schmitt after winning the first 6-3.

Lucas Heap was the state runner-up in the singles bracket. He lost to Cameron Luhring of Aplington-Parkersburg, who didn’t drop a single set on his way to a championship.

Caleb Briggs went 1-2 and finished in the consolation bracket.

Pella is the No. 2 team in the state behind Xavier, and will join Wahlert and Spencer in the 1A state team semifinals this Tuesday morning at the Waveland Tennis Park in Des Moines.
