The Melcher-Dallas Coal Miners Committee will hold its annual celebration later this month. It begins Friday, June 25th with pony rides, a bags tournament, and fireworks. Saturday’s events include vendors and crafters in the park, American Legion Ceremony, golf cart decorating contest, and many more activities. The Coal Miners Golf Tournament is Sunday, June 27th. Committee President Angie Lepley says this celebration has grown significantly since its inception, and is intended to celebrate the community’s history as a coal mining town.
“This has been an event since 1975. A group of coal mining men would have a golf tournament, and the ladies of the community decided to have a picnic. Finally they couldn’t do that anymore, and they handed it to the fire department, who did it for a while. This is the 10th year for our committee. It’s important for our coal mining heritage in our community, the coal miners and the ladies who wanted to honor them and the work they did. It’s a huge way to honor our heritage.”
The Melcher-Dallas Coal Miners celebration runs June 25th through 27th.
