The Indianola baseball team found themselves down 9-3 in a non-conference matchup with Centerville Thursday evening, but came all the way back to force extra innings and won in walkoff fashion in the eighth 12-11.
The Big Reds scored a pair of runs to start the contest, only to see the Indians quickly regain the lead 3-2 after one inning. A six-run second for Centerville saw them build a seemingly insurmountable lead, especially after adding an insurance run in the fourth to take the six run lead.
The Indians got a run back in the fifth, but Centerville answered to lead 10-4 giving Indianola just six outs to mount a comeback. A five-run bottom of the sixth got the Indians right back in it, and after Centerville scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh, Indianola would score two to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning to force extras, then walked it off in the bottom of the eighth.
Head coach Jon Fitzpatrick tells KNIA Sports he is starting to see his team succeed in later innings as they gain more experience at the varsity level, and are winning games that they might not have won earlier in the year.
The win improves the Indians record to 15-5, and they go back to Little Hawkeye Conference play tonight hosting Pella Christian.
