All four pitchers went the distance as the Tulip City baseball teams clashed Wednesday at Pella High School, as the Dutch swept the Eagles 6-5 and 1-0 to earn the season series, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Pitching was king, although the Dutch got all of their scoring out of the way early in the opener, tallying six runs on six hits. Bennett Spronk kept Pella in check over the next six innings, and the Eagles took advantage of three Pella errors to score four of their five runs against Mason Wittmer. Pella Christian left the tying run at third base after a two-run error gave the road team a chance. Wittmer struck out nine and gave up one earned run in the complete game victory.

The second contest belonged to Ryan Mace, who pitched a five-hit shutout and had a pair of doubles, including the hit that drove in the game’s only run in the opening inning in the nightcap. Mace says it was important for the team to bounce back after another rough patch and to be able to take the season series after the Eagles got the jump on the Dutch on Eagle Lane.

RYAN MACE POSTGAME INTERVIEW:

Lincoln Vander Molen scattered six hits in six innings for the Eagles on the mound. Pella improves to 15-11 overall and 10-8 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and are off until a Friday night home game against Indianola, which can be heard on 92.1 KRLS; the Eagles fall to 8-20 overall and 5-14 against league foes — they welcome Conference Champions Norwalk to Eagle Lane this evening, with pregame starting at 7:15 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
