The Indianola Fire Department wants to remind those who may plan to set off fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend to do so safely. Firefighter Bob Soukup tells KNIA News to not light off fireworks while drinking alcohol, and to especially keep a watch over kids while in the vicinity of fireworks. Soukup said even the smaller, seemingly harmless fireworks can cause injury.
“One of the most dangerous fireworks, one that causes the most injuries especially to children, one that you wouldn’t automatically think of, is sparklers. Sparklers burn at almost 2000 degrees fahrenheit, those are horrible burns instantly if you touch those. But follow some common sense, keep things that are supposed to be on the ground, on the ground, and do what the directions say.”
Soukup also said the best way to enjoy fireworks is to go and see a show run by professionals, and barring that to follow the City of Indianola’s ordinance on fireworks. Listen to the full interview below.
