An inability to string together hits and baserunners kept the Pella baseball team from advancing in the 3A Substate playoffs, falling to Bondurant-Farrar 2-1 in a season-ending loss heard live on 92.1 KRLS Friday evening.
The Bluejays got the early jump after a Dutch error sandwiched between hits led to the game’s first run, and only tally until Bondurant added insurance in the top of the 5th. Pella’s bats generated just two hits in the first five innings — one came with two outs in the 2nd, and the other was a Nick DeJong double in the 4th where is was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple.
A three-hit rally loaded the bases with no outs, but a DeJong sac fly-RBI was the only offense they could muster. Pella left two more on with two outs on the season-ending strikeout.
Jason Knox struck out seven batters as a starting pitcher and Mason Wittmer struck out the side in the 7th in his final inning wearing green and white.
Pella finishes the 2021 season at 20-16 and says farewell to six seniors.
