The 2021 Central College men’s soccer roster is going to be heavy on underclassmen but led by a strong contingent of upperclassmen going into its first fall season in two years. The Dutch went 3-4-1 in its abbreviated 2021 spring campaign, finishing sixth in the American Rivers Conference. Fifteen letterwinners return from that squad, including nine starters. However, only 11 of the 37 players on the roster were on the roster in 2019, the last time Central played a normal fall schedule.
A 16-game regular season schedule awaits the Dutch. The lighter schedule gives the coaching staff more time to learn about their squad without the pressure of wins and losses.
As a freshman, John Foster earned honorable mention recognition from the American Rivers Conference coaches after playing 702 minutes and making seven starts in goal. He won a pair of shutouts and faced 96 shots.
Offensively, the Dutch never gained their footing in the spring, scoring just seven goals in eight contests. Injuries were a big part of the problem and remain a problem this spring after losing Tony Cervelli for the season due to an injury suffered in the spring.
Matthew West and Zach Worster had successful offensive campaigns in 2019 and will look to get back in sync this fall.
Mueller could play on the attack or in the defensive half and Tristin Gilles caught the coaches attention during the Luther game in April and will get a good look as well.
Central’s first game is Wednesday, September 1 at 4:30 p.m. on its home field against St. Olaf College (Minn.)
