The Indianola School Board held a discussion regarding the use of the Indians name and logo at their meeting Monday, deciding to continue to gather more information and wait for a new board that will have new members being sworn in beginning 2022. Board President Rob Keller tells KNIA News this process has been a long time in the making, beginning with reaching out to the Native American Guardian Association, and having them do an assessment on the use of the name and logo, which approved the school district’s use. Keller also said the discussion on the agenda was not geared towards making a decision one way or the other, but rather a way for board members to discuss ways to hear from the public on the issue.

“We know that in the community some people have an opinion one way, and some people have an opinion the other way we totally understand that, that’s going to come later where we are going to hear from the public. But right now we are just determining what’s the best way to hear from the public. We are also considering bringing in representatives from the Native American Guardian Association and another local or state tribe that feels opposite of what the NAGA assessment found. I think it’s important for the public to hear from the organizations all viewpoints.”
