indianola-3

The #9 in class 4A Indianola football team survived a wild first five minutes that saw three touchdowns, and a five touchdown first quarter to dominate Ankeny Centennial in their season opener Friday evening 42-13 in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Indians struck first on a 63-yard screen pass connection from quarterback Brady Blake to Kael Kolarik to lead 7-0, but the Jaguars answered immediately on their first offensive play after a long kickoff return to tie the score. Then after a Kolarik fumble, the Jaguars scored on their next play to lead 13-7 after just running two plays with 9:40 left in the first quarter.

The Indianola defense stepped up from that point on, not allowing another score as the Indians score two more touchdowns in the first quarter on a Kolarik 1-yard rush, and after Blake went down to an injury, backup quarterback Bennett Brueck threw another touchdown to Carter Erickson to take a 21-13 lead after the first 12 minutes.
The Indians got another score on a three-yard run by Brueck in the second quarter as the game slowed down for both squads, and led to a 28-13 halftime advantage. The slow pace continued into the second half, with Brueck threading a pass to Drew Kingery for a 37-yard score, with Kolarik adding another 1-yard TD run. Head coach Eric Kluver said this was what the Indians were looking for to begin the season.

Brueck ended the game going 13/15 through the air for 205 yards and two touchdowns, adding another on the ground, while Kolarik ran for 101 yards and ran in three total touchdowns. The Indians improve to 1-0 on the season, and next play Glenwood on the road.
