PCM’s football squad opened the 2021 season with a 30-14 victory over Davis County, while their volleyball squad will be in action for a tournament at West Marshall today.
The Mustangs’ football squad opened the game rusty, failing to score in the first quarter and a half, struggling offensively. After Davis County took a 6-0 lead, PCM got on the board when Carson Vandelune found Durant VanDyke for a 29-yard touchdown to make it 7-6 PCM. After PCM took the lead, they never looked back. Vandelune added a seven-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Matt Rosonke in the second half.
Vandelune finished the game with 144 total yards and three touchdowns, but the star of the night was freshman Adrian Robbins, who rushed for 102 yards and a score to seal the deal in the fourth quarter. Coach Greg Bonnett raved about Robbins at the beginning of the season due to his quickness and his ability to cut back.
“He has quite a bit of wiggle, I think he is every bit as fast as those two, maybe even faster than those two (Kaden Hale and Carter Burns). He’s got really good hips and understands how to move.”
PCM ran for 250 yards and gained 364 total yards in the victory while holding Davis County to under 200 yards of offense and forcing three turnovers. PCM will be back in action next Friday, as they travel to Lynn Stadium for a showdown with Newton.
The Mustangs’ volleyball squad will have their first tournament of 2021 as they travel to West Marshall. PCM will compete with seven other teams, including the host, BCLUW, Centerville, Columbus Catholic, Davis County, Grundy Center, and state qualifier Van Meter. PCM is coming off finishing second in the Newton Early Bird Invitational Tuesday Night, starting off the season at 2-1. The Mustangs’ two wins were in straight sets over Des Moines Hoover and Saydel.
The tournament will begin at West Marshall at 9:00 AM.
