The Tulip City Volleyball teams traveled to the Skip Anderson Classic Saturday for the first tournament of the 2021 fall season.
No. 9 in 4A Pella finished the day 5-1 and in the silver bracket, with their lone loss coming to No. 13 in 4A North Polk (20-22, 16-21). The Dutch attained 2-0 sweeps of Ames (21-7, 21-6), Gilbert (21-10, 21-10), Carroll (21-15, 21-15), and No. 9 in 1A Holy Trinity (21-12, 21-18). Pella came back against Des Moines Roosevelt (18-21, 21-11, 15-9) in the morning rounds. The Dutch improve to 6-1 overall and host Indianola Tuesday in the Little Hawkeye Conference volleyball opener.
Pella Christian was 2-4 overall in their opening matches of the new year, with wins over No. 6 in Class 3A Red Oak (14-21, 21-19, 15-13) and Fort Madison (21-8, 21-9). The Eagles fell to No. 11 in 4A Bondurant-Farrar (13-21, 9-21), Gilbert (16-21, 22-20, 7-15), Ames (18-21, 16-21), and Williamsburg (21-13, 13-21, 14-16).
Sarah Gritters finished with 48 kills, 19 digs, four service aces, and three blocks; Natalie Harrill tallied six aces and 42 digs; Chloe Huisman racked up 101 assists and six aces, and Trinity Vos contributed with eight blocks on the day for the Eagles. Pella Christian opens the conference season at Norwalk Tuesday.
