Today is the official due date for property tax payments in Marion County, though they don’t become delinquent until October 1st. Treasurer Michaela Bigaouette tells KNIA/KRLS News the statements sent out are based on the property values as of January 1st, 2020, and recent changes are not reflected.
“It seems we’ve gotten a lot of questions on credits, whether that’s the homestead credit, military credit, the business property tax credit, a lot of people have signed up for those in the last year or two. I think what gets lost in translation is when you sign up for that, you don’t get that on the next tax statement. This tax statement is based on the value of your property as of January 1st, 2020. So if you hadn’t signed up for that credit at that time, it’s not going to be on this tax statement, it will be on next year’s statement. The same goes if you’ve made a change to your property, that change, if it wasn’t in effect as of January 1st, 2020, it won’t be reflected on this tax statement.”
A 1.5 percent penalty will be assessed if these payments become delinquent. Payments can be made in person at the courthouse, over the phone, or online. Bigaouette encourages anyone with questions to contact her office.
