Late flourish comes up short in Central women’s soccer loss
Paige Cahill’s first collegiate goal in the final 10 minutes of the Central College women’s soccer season opener against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) wasn’t enough in a 2-1 defeat Wednesday afternoon. Central (0-1-0) yielded a pair of goals in the first half before finding the back of the net in the 82nd minute to make it 2-1. Jasmine Trinidad put a shot on frame and Cahill cleaned up the rebound to light up the scoreboard.

Central has a pair of games this weekend, starting with another home match against Ripon College (Wis.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. The team also travels to Cornell College on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Dutch debut new talent in men’s soccer defeat
In its season opener, the Central College men’s soccer team debuted five new freshmen in its starting lineup and battled St. Olaf College (Minn.) to the end in a 2-1 loss Wednesday night.

After giving up two goals in the first 25 minutes, Central (0-1-0) clamped down defensively and held the Oles (1-0-0) off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Central started to rally in the 50th minute when Jordan Groshek drew a penalty kick on a foul in the box and Brant Mueller buried the penalty attempt. John Foster took the loss in goal while making four saves.

The Dutch host Grinnell College on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Dutch volleyball team tripped up in triangular
In its first action of the fall, the Central College volleyball dropped a pair of 3-0 matches against Augustana College and Cornell College Wednesday night. The Vikings beat the Dutch 25-23, 25-13, 26-24 and the Rams were victorious 25-17, 25-13, 25-19 over Central.

Outside hitter Krissa Larson led the team in kills for both matches, notching six against Cornell and five against Augustana. Natalie Gaszynski had eight between the two matches, including six against Cornell.

Central is the co-host of an Invitational this weekend with Grinnell College this weekend and the first match for the Dutch is Friday at 8 p.m. against the University of Minnesota – Morris at 8 p.m. in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
